How to Clean Your Boat’s Interior

Stains

There are a lot of places where stains can appear on a boat. However, the most detrimental stains are rust and hard water, and the longer they’re present the stronger they get. Thankfully, removing rust stains is a relatively easy task. Simply purchase a rust remover spray, apply it, and allow it to sit for as long as the instructions direct. Afterward, scrub the stain with a brush or towel and watch it disappear.

For hard water stains, you can buy a cleaner or try a mixture of water and white vinegar. Apply the mixture to the stains and allow it to sit a moment before wiping it away with a soft towel. If the stain does not disappear it may need to be scrubbed with a brush and a heavier mixture of water and baking soda. 

Steel and Glass Surfaces

It’s difficult to avoid rust and hard water stains from appearing. However, regularly washing your metal and glass surfaces — where these stains are most likely to appear — may help! Take a soft cloth and sud it up with warm water and dish soap. Give your steel and glass surfaces a thorough cleaning before rinsing them with more warm water. Afterward, be sure to dry them with an absorbent towel. For windows, you may want to follow up with a window cleaner to avoid streaks.

The Deck

Your deck collects a ton of dirt and debris throughout the day, simply because it is the most used area of a boat. Before you break out the water hose and soap, put away any on-deck furniture or items that may be in the way. Give the deck a good sweep and pick up trash and debris that may be present. 

Now you can rinse the deck, giving stains and dried substances an extra hard spray when you find them. Take your boat cleaner and your scrub brush and do your best to remove any grime or sticky substances. Afterward, you can rinse the deck again and squeegee away excess water. Allow your deck to dry completely before covering or storing your boat.
